Although development comes in many forms, linguistic development is steady. It begins by learning sounds. All babies are able to make sounds and in time learn to form words through hearing those around them. Processing language and learning language are two different skills beginning as a baby and continuing throughout childhood. By beginning to learn foreign languages at a young age, a child can gain habits in those languages. A child begins to learn through listening, seeing and imitating. In this growth process they become able to speak by repeating the words and sounds they hear.

Teaching a child a new language is done by making the language more familiar to them. At a young age, a child is able to learn through games, songs and visible examples to give a clear message. Play is a great method for children to learn. In this way, the child is able to meet the new language in a familiar environment. By learning through song, children are not only able to enjoy themselves but also retain visual information that they process.
